Learn lessons of Vietnam
Wednesday 04 November 2009 The obscene farce that is the war in Afghanistan has claimed another five British soldiers' lives, bringing the total of lives lost in Gordon Brown's ritual obeisance to US foreign policies to 229.
Five more families will now face the rest of their lives with only memories to remind them of their loved ones who died in the prosecution of this war.
In Parliament, Mr Brown told MPs that the Taliban had already claimed responsibility for the shootings, but that is only half of the story, for the real responsibility rests with Mr Brown himself and the handful of politicians who insist on continuing this country's involvement in a vicious, useless and pointless war.
And, to rub salt into the wound, his equally useless and pointless Immigration Minister Phil Woolas added yet another ridiculous excuse for the war, claiming that British troops fighting in Afghanistan are there in part to help control immigration.
Mr Woolas told MPs on the home affairs committee that, believe it or not, the number of asylum-seekers coming to Britain would "significantly increase" if troops were withdrawn.
There have been many irrelevant claims as to why the troops are in that country, but Mr Woolas's offering must be the most facile and insulting yet.
One might hope that a minister in this government would appreciate the simple and inarguable case that wars cause refugees, not the other way round.
