Why are we allowing the majority to take away the rights of a minority?

I've heard talking points like "the population isn't ready for gays to have equal rights."
Well, the population wasn't "ready" for African-Americans to get civil rights either. That didn't stop Congress and LBJ from shoving equal rights down the bigots' throats.

Do away with those and we might be a sane country in a generation or two.

2. It starts with the leadership. The President opposes same sex marriage.
|
He also thinks the states should decide the issue.

I have no adequate equal-protection response when someone asks why polygamous marriages shouldn't be recognized.
So, if equal protection is to be served, the only thing to do is remove marriage entirely from government jurisdiction. As a matter of sanctification, leave that to religion. Otherwise, rights and obligations can be freely established in contract and through estate planning instruments.
Repeal ALL marriage statutes. Or ask the courts to strike them down.

4. That Still Doesn't Answer The Question Of Benefits...

I also believe that marriage in the "traditional" sense is a religious matter more than a civil one, but that doesn't address the legal issues and advantages that heterosexual married couples have that gay couples don't, including tax deductions, joint insurance coverage, death benefits and passing along property or an estate. Either all get these rights or none. The polygamy or polyamory argument is a red herring.

9. I'm polyamorous and I completely agree with you

After seeing the crap the gays are going through, I no longer think marriage equality for those of us who are in polyamorous relationships will even happen in my lifetime. I want my partners and me to have equal access if any of us are in the hospital but the sanctification, as you put it, should be left to the religious. We know we're solid without a piece of paper.
