India suspends first GM food crop on safety grounds
India has halted the cultivation of what would have been its first genetically modified (GM) vegetable crop because of safety concerns. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said more studies were needed to ensure genetically modified aubergines were safe for consumption. "Public sentiment is negative. It is my duty to adopt a cautious approach," Mr Ramesh said. He said the moratorium on growing BT brinjal - as the variety of aubergine is known in India - would remain in place until tests were carried out "to the satisfaction of everyone". The BBC's Geeta Pandey who was at the news conference in Delhi says it appears Mr Ramesh has put any cultivation of GM vegetables in India on hold indefinitely.

Feb 03 · Glad a newspaper is noticing that the Los Angeles area is in the forefront in the movement to give over the schools there to outside bidders, to have them no longer run by the school district. The editorial makes a very important point as well about technical high schools once privatized required all to take college bound courses. Change is not necessarily reform. Genuine reform produces lasting, beneficial improvements and isn't concocted by editors or frustrated school boards wil

Feb 08 · A recent article in The Nation by Lawrence Lessig, titled “How to Get our Democracy Back – There Will Be No Change Until we Change Congress”, puts the blame for our current state of affairs squarely on the U.S. Congress. Actually, it’s not Congress per se that is the problem, but our system for electing our Congresspersons – which of course has brought us our current Congress. Of course, our broken system is also used to elect our President and myriad lesser public officials. Lessig begin

Feb 08 · Stonewall Shelby and the Party of "NO"[/FONT By Bennet Kelley As Washington is paralyzed by the "snowpocalypse," images of the city's majestic monuments in a sea of white snow bring back fond memories of my years there. Eventually Mother Nature or the D.C. government will clear away the snow, but even then Washington will remain paralyzed by something far less endearing than even yellow snow -- Republican nihilism. Last week, Senator Shelby (R-AL) used a parliamentary tactic known as a

Feb 08 · Democrats Need to Talk Turkey and Show Their Colors on Pocketbook Issues By Bennet Kelley and Ian Mitroff Some years ago, angered by the fact that Italy refused to extradite a Kurdish rebel responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent Turks, the Turkish people threatened to boycott Italian products and even attack the stores of Italian businesses based in Turkey. Some local businesses attempted to dodge the issue by claiming they were not Italians but were merely running Italian bu

Feb 07 · What it would have cost us to publicly fund independent media that would have prevented the invasion of Iraq wouldn't amount, in a year, to what we spend on a month of occupying that country. Diverting the cost of a month of war to a year of giving substance to our "freedom of the press" would mean that the last time someone asked you about the Teabaggers' genius in being smart enough to talk dumb enough to persuade everyone to be racists would, in fact, be the LAST time anyone would ask yo

Feb 07 · Like many of you, I have witnessed the continual, steady rise of the radical right-wing throughout my life. It has had its bumps along the road, with a few setbacks, but whether it is our tax code, militarism, corporatism, freedom of the press, or civil liberties, the great strides made under the New Deal have been eroded methodically to a point that, frankly, is truly troubling. Someone here, in good spirit, replied to one of my recent posts as "fatalistic". Well, at some point, those of us

Feb 07 · The Indypendent has a summary of those involved in "reform" of the schools. It is like the free market system which , and which he is finally seeing come to pass. We should apply the free enterprise system to our education system by introducing competition among schools, administrators, and teachers. Our educators should be paid based on their performance and held accountable based on clear standards with real consequences. These ideas are designed to stimulate thinking beyond the timid “le
