Senate bill fines people refusing health coverage
WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals. In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties. Called "shared responsibility payments," the fines would be set at least

Bush, told reporters after the first hearing on federal lawsuit that was filed in May. A high

1 hour ago · On Thursday, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) offered her support for the health care overhaul proposal put forth by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which she is a member. In the process, she issued a statement that removed any doubt about where she stands on a publicly run insurance option. "My colleagues and I on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee have been working on a plan to reform the health care system in this country," Hagan's statement read. "We

Judge Tentatively Dismisses Charges Against Lori Drew:
2 hours ago · I am happy with this result. i think lori drew is a piece of human refuse, and i certainly think she should be sued by the parent, but the CRIMINAL case was a complete sham. You may recall that this is the case in which our coblogger Orin Kerr (currently on leave from the blog because of his temporary government position) participated; he has written the leading law review article on the statute involved. Here's a brief excerpt from an L.A. Times blog: A federal judge tentatively decid

Buffett donates $1.5 billion (world health, poverty and economic issues)
2 hours ago · BY STEVE JORDON Warren Buffett's 2009 donations to four charitable foundations are worth $1.51 billion, a new report today showed, continuing his pledge to donate most of his fortune to charity. That's the smallest dollar amount since he began the donations in 2006 because the value of the donated shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. stock has declined in the past year. It's the second year that the value of the shares is down. Buffett's donations follow a formula that calculates the numbe

Jul 02 · The book I just read is in the running, in my estimation, for second-best text on how to undo the imperial presidency. (Can't be first, of course.) It's called "Madison's Nightmare: How Executive Power Threatens American Democracy," by Peter M. Shane, and it's much more about what the problem is than how to solve it, but the two things are not really separable, and the analysis of the problem here is invaluable. This is a detailed and extensively researched look at the interactions among th

Jul 02 · From The Plum Line: “We have 60 votes on paper,” Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, said Wednesday in an interview. “But we cannot bulldoze anybody; it doesn’t work that way. My caucus doesn’t allow it. And we have a very diverse group of senators philosophically. I am not this morning suddenly flexing my muscles.”… “One or two could peel off on any issue,” said Mr. Reid, who has seen the ranks of his party swell by 15 in the past two elections. Jul 01 · Debt is capitalism’s dirty little secret By Ben Funnell Published: June 30 2009 19:14 | Last updated: June 30 2009 19:14 Just why is there so much debt in the Anglo-Saxon world? Bankers and regulators know well that it is in nobody’s long-term interests to have allowed borrowing to escalate to a position where the US now owes far more, as a multiple of the economy, than at the start of the Great Depression. The answer is capitalism’s dirty little secret: excessive lending was the o

Jul 01 · I read part of the following article with surprise, guess I was thinking it would just be expanding Medicare and making some changes...or at least along those lines. Maybe I am reading it wrong, maybe it doesn't matter...but just surprised. I think there has to be competition, or no progress will be lasting. Many people on Medicare now would be uninsurable because of their age and illnesses. I guess, though, if they have another "public option" set up....it would have the policy of allowin

Jul 01 · Three days before the end of his Presidency, on January 17, 1961 President Eisenhower warned us against: the acquisition of unwarranted influence… by the military-industrial complex: the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power (which) exists and will persist, (which) we must never let … endanger our liberties or democratic processes… has often been characterized as prophetic. However, it may just as well be characterized as a little too little and too late. James Douglass,

Jul 01 · You would think that if you cheered your senator when he stated that the loser in an election should concede in the best interests of the people, and then he refused to concede when he lost, you would at least notice the self-serving hypocrisy. You would think that if you heard a radio or TV personality constantly promoting hatred and violence against groups of people or individual fellow citizens, you would question their decency and love of country - and, every now and again, their sanity.

Jul 01 · Do they have a fourth of July in Italy? That's not a trick question. This July 4th, Italians plan to gather in Vicenza to take nonviolent action aimed at freeing Italy from U.S. occupation and opposing the proposed construction of an enormous new U.S. military base in a town already swarming with U.S. troops stationed at existing bases. For years now, a major campaign organized by local residents has resisted the construction of the new base. The history of this campaign is chronicled in Eng
