Senate passes Kerry provision to help crack down on offshore tax havens
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.), senior member of the Finance Committee, today applauded passage of legislation to end blatant tax evasion. Today’s passage of the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act includes legislation from Kerry and Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) that provides the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) new tools to detect, deter and discourage offshore tax abuses that currently allow companies and individuals avoid paying taxes. “I’ve been at this issue a long time. When I first came to the Senate, I investigated an illegal bank and the murky network that allows powerful people to hide assets abroad and evade our tax laws. It repulsed me that while the average American plays by the rules and pays taxes, some of the biggest corporations avoid paying their fair share. You can even pick up a business magazine and find advertisements for offshore tax havens,” said Sen. Kerry. “Today’s vote is a long overdue and essential step to mitigate

41 minutes ago · The United States hopes President Barack Obama's visit next week to Indonesia will help spur reforms that boost trade with Southeast Asia's largest economy and the world's fourth most populous nation. To increase trade, "it's incumbent upon Indonesia to make market-oriente

2 hours ago · By JIM FITZGERALD and DAN STRUMPF HARRISON, N.Y. The black box, known as an event data recorder, yielded information on engine speed and pedal position, Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Wade Hoyt said. Investigators worked until just before 6 p.m. and weren't

US wants Osama bin Laden alive, US commander in Afghanistan says
2 hours ago · The top commander in Afghanistan is still on the hunt for Osama bin Laden and would take him alive if possible. But Gen. Stanley McChrystal, speaking with reporters by videoconference at the Pentagon Wednesday, appeared to contradict what the Obama administration’s top lawyer said Tuesday. Attorney General Eric Holder told a congressional panel Tuesday that he thought the chances that Mr. bin Laden would be captured were “infinitesimal” because it is far more likely he would be killed by an a

Cardinal apologizes for child abuse 'failures'
2 hours ago · (CNN) -- The head of the Irish Catholic Church, Cardinal Sean Brady, admitted Wednesday that the church's response to abuse had been "hopelessly inadequate." "The church must continue to deal with the enormity of the hurt caused by abuse of children by some clergy ... and the hopelessly inadequate response to that abuse in the past," Brady said Wednesday. Church leaders must "own up to and take responsibility for any mismanagement or cover-up of child abuse," he said. The cardinal also

Mar 17 · , Jon. March 17, 2010 The greatest problem with the Senate health care bill is not that it does “too little” to help people. The problem is that the bill does too many terrible things to help all the bad actors. The Senate bill further entrenches the private health insurance system. It continues the terrible pattern of privatizing our social safety net in such a way that business skims 20% off the top. It makes sure the big, life saving medications of the future remain . It takes a

Mar 17 · I saw this documentary yesterday and was in a state of deep depression. Many or most of you have probably seen it, but to me it was new. It is about how mass media in the US is controlled by a handful of large corporations. These corporations have one goal: to get larger and control the system that reports the news. To this end, big media has aligned itself with the conservative Republican political minority and has pushed their selfish agenda in order to gain political favor and build fortune

Mar 17 · When I worked for Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign in 2003, he routinely won the most applause at debates but was minimized or entirely left out of the next day's stories in the corporate media. This meant that peace, and fair trade, and single-payer healthcare were left out too. At one debate at the University of New Hampshire, Kucinich pushed back. Ted Koppel of ABC opened the debate with questions about endorsements. The second round of questions was about standing in the polls.

Mar 17 · I wrote this a year ago, but I think it remains relevant today... The Ballad of Henry Knox By William Rivers Pitt t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed Tuesday 17 March 2009 I've spent the last several weeks trying to come up with some pithy metaphor or analogy to frame everything that's going on in some optimistic or courageous light, but it's been nothing doing. Everybody's all up in arms over the million-dollar bonuses about to be collected by A.I.G. executives, and for good reason, but all the

Mar 16 · I took great pride in what I did. I worked at one of the "best" schools in town, and I worked at one of the "worst". I was the same teacher, but the other factors were variables. At the "best" school I had tremendous parental involvement. The parents overall demanded that their children respect the teachers and follow the rules. The parents themselves showed respect. We had the supplies and textbooks we needed. At the other school there was very little parental involvement. Ma

Mar 16 · Senator Ted Kaufman (D - DE) will deliver a speech today that represents a potential turning point for the country. ...................... As part of that effort, we must ensure that the legal system tackles financial crimes with the same gravity as other crimes. When crimes happened in the past (as in the case of Enron, when aided and abetted by, among others, Merrill Lynch, and not prevented by the supposed gatekeepers at Arthur Andersen), there were criminal convictions. If individua

Mar 16 · Imagine a world in which you can only talk about an issue----like the troubled relationship between Mother Goose characters, Jack and Jill---by referring to a less than three week old story written by someone in the corporate media. Mar 16 · ...praying to god that you never get really sick. Since there's nothing to address the overall cost of care. So if you make median income, you get a subsidy bringing your out of pocket annual cost for premium down to about $5,500 (taken from Keiser Foundation's subsidy calculator, and assumes the "silver" or mid-range plan option.) Not exactly chump change. Then, you have the cost of your deductible, say $1,000. Could be less, could be more, but I've payed $1,000 before when I once ha

Mar 14 · than before. It appears that the lower 5% of the schools might be closed each year. At that rate it won't take long to get the agenda of the corporatization of education in place. This replaces the AYP, Seems to me that no matter what the schools do...if they are in the bottom 5% they are doomed. It's called grading on the curve. As long as I am a member of this forum, I will continue to post about the hijacking of public education. If people disagree, the inevitable will happen.
