36 minutes ago · Bernard Madoff has hired a veteran prison consultant to help him to find the best possible jail in which to serve his 150-year sentence for Wall Street’s biggest fraud. After his sentencing this week Madoff, now Prisoner No 1727-054, met Herb Hoelter, of the National Centre for Institutions and Alternatives, whose previous clients include the jailed Sotheby’s chairman Alfred Taubman and the financiers Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky. The draconian maximum sentence imposed by the judge means

Mountain Home Arkansas Tea-baggin' event July 4 2009
2 hours ago · Attended the latest Tea bag event in my home town. The event was held at the local high school football field evidently expecting a larger turnout than the April 15th event which was held at the town square. The hours of this event were from 11am to 1pm, and I arrived at around 11:30. When I arrived they were only a few straglers coming in and it looked like most people had arrived early. As I stated earlier I also attended the April 15th event and there were approximately 1500 people at tha

Pope to G8: Against the crisis, invest in human beings and listen to the poor countries
2 hours ago · The solution to the global economic crisis lies in "investing in human beings"; maintaining and even " increasing development aid" to poor countries; ensuring an "ethical value" to technical solutions; listening not only to rich countries with major economic success, but also to those "less developed". This is Benedict XVI’s invitation to the Heads of Government who are to gather in l'Aquila from July 8th to 10th next, in a letter sent to the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The pope

‘Mississippi Burning’ town gets black mayor
3 hours ago · Philadelphia, MISS. -- In the 1960s, when he was a child, James Young used to hide behind the couch in his family home as armed Ku Klux Klan thugs prowled through town terrorizing blacks after nightfall. Decades later, Young was elected the first black mayor, by a multi-racial majority in a much different time and place. His swearing in was this morning. "It's just unbelievable that it could happen to me," he said. "Who would have thought that I would be the mayor of Philadelphia, Mississippi?"

Study: Employer mandate could create jobs
4 hours ago · A study commissioned by liberal think tanks disputes claims that a “pay or play” employer mandate in a national healthcare plan would cause massive job loss, and says it could actually create jobs. The study by the Goldman School at the University of California, Berkeley found that in a “worst-case scenario,” 166,095 jobs could be lost, which would be about 0.1% of employed workers. But the study said that assumed several unlikely outcomes from healthcare reform, such as Congress not exempt

Group Sotomayor advised fought job tests
5 hours ago · WASHINGTON (AP) — A civil rights group on whose board Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor served filed racial bias lawsuits over employment examinations that resemble a Connecticut case in which she ruled against white firefighters, documents released by the Senate show. The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund represented Hispanic sanitation workers in New York City who wanted to stop white employees from getting promotions because, they argued, the qualifying exam unfairly disadv

Jul 04 · I wrote this Thursday morning before the Palin bomb went off... Michael Jackson passed away a week ago. He has not risen from the dead, as was prophesied in his "Thriller" video. That would be news, but no, the King of Pop remains un-un-dead at this point. But believe you me, the news media is ready if MJ appears before us again leading a well-rehearsed cadre of zombies in a dance routine down Main St. None of this would matter much to me, except it's raining. Again. It rained yesterda

Jul 04 · Being as I have only been a lurker here and never an offishul member of this board, I have asked NanceGreggs to post my GBCW thread for me: My RL name is Sarah Palin, and as some of you now know, today I resigned from my governorship of Alaska – because I love Alaska, and Alaskans, and all things Alaskanesque, along with the troops, and Trig, and General MacArthur, and everybody and everything that doesn’t get in my way, or on my last nerve, or can’t be shot and killed from a helicopter. Jul 03 · I much disagree with this. I think if we don't hold them accountable there will be no reform. Methinks a few of the ones getting ads run in their districts by progressive groups are running to the boss and asking the ads be stopped. From the WP today: President Obama, strategizing yesterday with congressional leaders about health-care reform, complained that liberal advocacy groups ought to drop their attacks on Democratic lawmakers and devote their energy to promoting passage of c

Jul 03 · During the 2000 recount in Florida, a bunch of Republican operatives staged a “spontaneous” riot at the Miami-Dade County polling place in order to stop election workers from counting lawfully cast votes. Among those who were bussed into the state was one Roger Pyle , suspect number one from the infamous lineup above. At the time he was an aid to then Congressman Tom Delay (R). Note his outraged expression. The democratic principle, handed down from our Founders and codified in our Constit

Jul 03 · What separates humans from animals can be summed up as one simple thing -- the mastery of fire. Even "using tools" doesn't cut it anymore, as apes have been shown to use their own tools to achieve their own modest goals. When you get right down to it, the sole dividing line between us and the other creatures which crawl this planet can be drawn at the mastery of fire. Animals are still scared of fire. Humans, now, are not. This may sound like a strange beginning to my annual Independence

Jun 29 · "As the health care debate heats up over the summer one of the central arguing points will be the possibility of creating a "public" or government-run insurance option as part of the reform bill. We take a look at how the early argument is shaping up and how important a public option seems to be to President Obama in today's Sunday Show Roundup. Jul 03 · There are a million and one things that people can do to try to end the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and to prevent new ones in Iran and elsewhere, as well as to close U.S. military bases in dozens of other nations around the world. Certain people are skilled at or interested in particular approaches, and nobody should be discouraged from contributing to the effort in their preferred ways. Far too often proposals to work for peace are needlessly framed as attacks on all strate

Jul 03 · A President Breaks Hearts in Appalachia By Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Friday, July 3, 2009 Mountaintop removal coal mining is the worst environmental tragedy in American history. When will the Obama administration finally stop this Appalachian apocalypse? If ever an issue deserved President Obama's promise of change, this is it. Mining syndicates are detonating 2,500 tons of explosives each day -- the equivalent of a Hiroshima bomb weekly -- to blow up Appalachia's mountains and extract sub

Jul 03 · Matt Taibbi's blockbuster piece in the July 9-13 issue of Rolling Stone, , describes in brilliant, painful and infuriating detail how Goldman Sachs "has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they're about to do it again." Jul 03 · Nineteen pro-life House Democrats signed a letter last week to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressing their opposition to any health care reform that includes abortion funding. “We cannot support any health-care reform proposal unless it explicitly excludes abortion from the scope of any government-defined or subsidized health insurance plan,” the letter read. Jul 02 · The book I just read is in the running, in my estimation, for second-best text on how to undo the imperial presidency. (Can't be first, of course.) It's called "Madison's Nightmare: How Executive Power Threatens American Democracy," by Peter M. Shane, and it's much more about what the problem is than how to solve it, but the two things are not really separable, and the analysis of the problem here is invaluable. This is a detailed and extensively researched look at the interactions among th

Jul 02 · From The Plum Line: “We have 60 votes on paper,” Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, said Wednesday in an interview. “But we cannot bulldoze anybody; it doesn’t work that way. My caucus doesn’t allow it. And we have a very diverse group of senators philosophically. I am not this morning suddenly flexing my muscles.”… “One or two could peel off on any issue,” said Mr. Reid, who has seen the ranks of his party swell by 15 in the past two elections.
