Sun sets on US power: report predicts end of dominance
• US intelligence: 'We can no longer call shots alone' • European Union will be 'hobbled giant' by 2025 • Triumph of western democracy not certain The United States' leading intelligence organisation has warned that the world is entering an increasingly unstable and unpredictable period in which the advance of western-style democracy is no longer assured, and some states are in danger of being "taken over and run by criminal networks". The global trends review, produced by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) every four years, represents sobering reading in Barack Obama's intray as he prepares to take office in January. The country he inherits, the report warns, will no longer be able to "call the shots" alone, as its power over an increasingly multipolar world begins to wane. Looking ahead to 2025, the NIC (which coordinates analysis from all the US intelligence agencies), foresees a fragmented world, where conflict over scarce resources is on the rise, poorly contained

UPDATE 2- US clout down, risks up by 2025 -intel outlook
17 minutes ago · WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. economic and political clout will decline over the next two decades and the world will be more dangerous, with food and water scarce and advanced weapons plentiful, U.S. spy agencies projected on Thursday. The National Intelligence Council analysis "Global Trends 2025" also said the current financial crisis on Wall Street is just the first phase of a global economic reordering. The U.S. dollar's role as the world's major currency would weaken to become a

Russian MPs vote for longer presidency
28 minutes ago · MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's lower house of parliament approved on Friday a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term of office to six years from four. The amendment was passed on final reading by the State Duma lower house by 392 votes to 57. Kremlin critics say the change could be part of a plan for ex-president Vladimir Putin to return to his old job, although officials have denied this. The chamber, dominated by Putin's ruling United Russia party, also voted overwhelmingl

Judge Orders Release of 5 Guantanamo Prisoners
35 minutes ago · Judge orders release of 5 Guantanamo prisoners By David G. Savage November 21, 2008 Reporting from Washington -- A federal judge ruled here for the first time Thursday that the Bush administration had no basis for holding several of its long-term prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and he ordered that five of the Algerian natives go free. The question in the case was whether the men, who lived in Bosnia and had never fought or been near a battlefield, had plotted with Al Qaeda and were

Bush takes financial reform agenda to APEC forum
45 minutes ago · David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - George W. Bush makes his last scheduled trip abroad as U.S. president on Friday, heading to an Asia-Pacific summit where he will seek support for global financial reform and hold talks on ending North Korea's nuclear program. Theatre Rhino Secedes from California (GLAAD Company to Hold Ceremony Today)
1 hour ago · Theatre Rhino Secedes From California It's not unusual to come across people in California think that the state should secede from the rest of the country. Until yesterday evening, however, I'd never heard of a group of Californians who want to secede from the state. But in light of the recent madness surrounding Proposition 8, namely the state's decision following the November 4 election to overturn a previous verdict to recognize same-sex marriages, America's longest-running queer theatr

Central bankers wary of deflation
1 hour ago · LONDON (Reuters) - Euro zone demand is plunging and price pressures vanishing, business surveys showed on Friday, while central bankers weighed the prospect of deflation. The Bank of Japan left its key interest rate at just 0.3 percent and said there would be a long road to recovery. But the United States, Britain and Europe are expected to ease their rates further next month as the worst financial crisis in 80 years hastens recession across much of the globe. Nov 20 · I am a little surprised at the "get on board" and "fall in line" stuff from a bunch of activist Democrats. I want to make it clear that I do wonder about some of the choices, and some of the obvious omissions. I don't see anything wrong with that at all. One example: The new HHS Secretary, Tom Daschle, has views about women's right that disturb me. The general consensus is that he is pro-choice, but that does not seem to be so in the past. Here is a video posted on You Tube las

Nov 19 · I know this is long, it is not edited because I don't want it to be lost in the night. I wrote it because Michael Moore's fervor inspired me, and he gave me what I think is a realistic way of looking at the crisis they are grappling with in Washington today. I was in Europe this fall and was struck massively by how they move people compared to our one and only way: Cars. I saw that basic cities have about 30 percent bicycle traffic. I saw streetcars throughout, and in some areas they

Nov 20 · Madfloridian gave me the idea for this post by noting in several recent posts her concern over the pressure being put on President-elect Obama and other Democrats to be “bi-partisan”, or “post-partisan”. I share that concern (and used some of her links for this post). In fact, that may be the biggest concern I have about our next President. Of course, we do not yet know to what extent he will go to be “post-partisan”. I’m hoping it will be a lot less than some people think. But wait! I

Nov 18 · Anti-choice groups are vowing to use these next years to grow their protests and demonstrations against choice by women in their private lives. They vow to intensify their efforts to cause problems for these women at abortion clinics. Here are some words from Father Pavone found at Right Wing Watch: "The election forces the pro-life movement to go back to what we do best — local grass-roots organizing," said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition. "W

Nov 20 · Not for nuthin’, my friend, but you’re not even in office yet – and you’re already screwin’ up BIG TIME. All that talk on the campaign trail – bladidy blah, blah, blah, blah – about listening to the voice of We, The People, and you just go ahead – without so much as a by-your-leave – and start appointing folks to key positions in your administration. Excuse me, but where was MY vote before you started offering jobs, willy-nilly? When was MY opinion sought before you decided to staff the W

Nov 19 · Mike Huckabee has said that gays and lesbians do not need protection of their civil rights, because they have not been the victims of systematic violence like racial minorities. I wonder what Mike Huckabee has been smoking. I. Nazi Germany There were several different kinds of triangles which the Nazis forced enemies of the state to wear. Nov 19 · Here is NOW's response and alarm about an anti-abortion bill he tried to get passed in 1997. I had not been aware of this, but the current climate in our country makes it pertinent. Father Pavone and others are planning on ramping up their opposition, so we need to know these things. NOW Executive Vice President Kim Gandy said today that abortion ban legislation prepared by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., is a politically expedient compromise that seriously imperils women'

Nov 18 · The Mst-Su, for those who don't know, is the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, north of Anchorage, home of the governor and a hotbed of rabid Palinistas. This is one brave little girl... Being a Caucasian high school girl sometimes makes me forget a few things. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in social life, school projects, homework, and studies. Sometimes I can forget what America looks like. Sometimes it takes a hateful word, a racial slur, or an act of disrespect to bring me to r

Nov 18 · inauguration, I know I can't wait until bush is gone and Obama takes the helm! Which brings up why I am starting this thread...Reality states that there is but one president at a time, and while bush is a miserable miscreant, the fact remains he is still in office until 1-20-09, at which time he will leave DC, (hopefully forever), and we can look forward to some changes. About changes, these things take time, and even though Obama is working on some pretty hefty stuff, we should all remind

Nov 19 · | Bernard Weiner | Our men's group, currently in our 17th year, is composed of middle-class professionals -- lawyers, educators, therapist, writer, corporate manager, doctor, etc. -- and each of us in this perilous economy in recent months has taken a deep financial hit of one form or another or knows (or has heard of) someone personally who is struggling to hold onto or already has lost his/her job. The general conclusion based on our personal knowledge, on the relevant economic indicator

Nov 19 · | Ernest Partridge | Over the past decade, I have written and published numerous essays critical of Libertarianism. In fact, much of the focus of my book in progress, , is a critique of the libertarian doctrines of market absolutism, social atomism, and negative rights. And yet, I would describe myself as a "semi-libertarian," in that I endorse the libertarian positions on personal liberty – of association, of religion (or lack thereof), of sexual preference, of free expression, etc. Thus
