Virginia warns wife of Justice Clarence Thomas her group is violating law State officials tell Virginia Thomas that her conservative advocacy group, Liberty Central Inc., must comply with a law that requires registration before seeking donations. Reporting from Washington Virginia consumer-protection officials have warned the wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas that her advocacy group is improperly soliciting contributions in the state. In a letter to Virginia Thomas on Thursday, the state Office of Consumer Affairs directed Liberty Central Inc. to the Virginia law that requires groups to register with the office or request an exemption before seeking donations for a charitable purpose. Liberty Central is a Virginia-based group soliciting contributions online and is not registered or exempt, said Michael Wright, the manager of regulatory programs at the Office of Consumer Affairs, a branch of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. 25 minutes ago · MOSCOW — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that proposals offered by the Israeli government to settle a diplomatic dispute with the United States were “useful and productive,” though it was not clear how close Israel had come to meeting American demands. Neither side has characterized the steps that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined in a call to Mrs. Clinton on Thursday night, a week after she called him with a rebuke and specific requests. March 19, 2010 | Despite a constant racket from the forces of the far-out right (Fox television's yackety-yackers, just-say-no GOP know-nothings, tea-bag howlers, Sarah Palinistas, et al.), the great majority of Americans support a bold progr

Mar 18 · WH Press Secretary Robert Gibbs during his press briefing that the rule prohibiting insurance companies from excluding adults for preexisting conditions will not take effect for another four years. Mar 18 · For health care reform.... "The battle for the individual rights of women is one of long standing and none of us should countenance anything which undermines it." Eleanor Roosevelt My wife had a conversation on blog tonight that I will share here - it was the rationalization and minimizing of the Nelson language in the bill, by those who claim to support women's right. It started with this post. The first sentence is maddening. Yes. It is status quo that politicians and anti-choice

Astonishingly, no teachers, professional educators, cognitive scientists, or learning experts were invited. The group that met to shape the future of American educ

Mar 18 · What are the requirements to serve as a moderator? The two most important requirements are the ability to work well with others, and the ability to exercise good judgment. The ability to stay calm under pressure is good, too. You don't need to have tens of thousands of posts, and you don't need to have been a DU member for many years. Other than that, our "minimum requirements" are not very strict: - A few hundred posts, - Six months of DU membership, - Donor (or former donor), - At l

Mar 17 · This issue gets little coverage, but it's critically important. One of the biggest and often overlooked problems with the Senate Bill (which is likely to be the basis of any future legislation) is that, while strengthening and enshrining the parasitic for-profit insurance industry, it will also result in *** weakening/eroding employer-sponsored coverage and shifting financial burden to individuals/families *** . Some points to consider: 1) All analyses indicate that employer-

Mar 17 · , Jon. March 17, 2010 The greatest problem with the Senate health care bill is not that it does “too little” to help people. The problem is that the bill does too many terrible things to help all the bad actors. The Senate bill further entrenches the private health insurance system. It continues the terrible pattern of privatizing our social safety net in such a way that business skims 20% off the top. It makes sure the big, life saving medications of the future remain .
